Energy drink warning

Beware if you drink energy drinks like Red Bull, Monster or Rock Star; the Indiana Poison Control center says caffeine poisoning has increased 50%. Poison control doctor, James Mowry, said caffeine poisoning means you could experience nausea, vomiting, anxiety, tremors and a rapid heart rate. Seizures and a severe blood pressure drop have been reported in severe cases. Mowry said the number of drinks consumed isn’t necessarily the problem. “The amount (of caffeine) per can is not excessive,” Mowry said. “But, the fact that people are drinking several cans - that’s a problem.” Bowling Green student Eli Smith says this won’t stop him from drinking his red bull. "You're willing to take that risk, especially when like you have to pull all nighters and all these other activities and stresses that you have,” Smith said. Mowry said the Indiana Poison Control Center normally receives 60 to 70 calls a year regarding caffeine poisoning. But, since 2006, they’ve received an estimated 90 calls a year. He said most cases aren’t severe and can be treated at home by drinking water while being monitored. Mowry said your height, weight, gender, age and number of energy drinks all factor into putting you over your caffeine limit. If you have more questions, contact the Indiana Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
